Laser Ablation |
The most recent technological advance in vein treatment is the pulse dye laser. Its application of targeting spider veins is extremely specific. It works by generating a high intensity light with a wave length set to be absorbed by only reddish pink structures and not injure any other tissue. The spider vein becomes damaged by the heat of the laser and over the next 6-8 weeks will be absorbed by the body. Expect the raised welt-like marks to last approximately 2 days. This represents the entire inflammatory response of the targeted spider veins.
What are the complications? A small percent (5-10%) of patients experience pigment changes along the lasered course. Increase or decrease in pigmentation can be present for 1 month to occasionally 1 year. These changes are very rarely permanent and are expected to completely resolve.
