There are three basic causes of superfluous hair. The first factor-and the principal cause of excessive hair in women-originates in the endocrine system, which produces hormones (this factor is usually generic). One of these hormones, androgen, causes the hair in the underarms, pubic area, legs and arms to grow coarser and darker. As a man produces more androgens, additional hair begins to appear on the face, neck, chest and back. When the level of androgens produced by a woman increases, the fine blonde hair often found on the face, neck and chest becomes coarser and darker-a condition known as hirsutism. The second factor related to hirsutism can be traced to certain steroid medications and some oral contraceptives. The third cause of excess hair growth is emotional trauma that can trigger hormones to produce more androgens. In women, the most common areas of unwanted hair we treat are the upper lip, chin, eyebrows, underarms, legs, bikini line, breasts, knuckles and toes. In men, the most common areas we treat are the back and chest. Traditional Treatment
There have been many treatments developed over the years for removing excess or unwanted hair. These include electrolysis-a method developed more than a century ago- as well as topical treatments such as waxing, depilatory creams and, of course, shaving. All of these methods are time-consuming. Some, like electrolysis, are expensive because they require numerous treatment sessions. Others such as creams, waxing and shaving must be repeated constantly to achieve acceptable, albeit temporary, results.
The New Technology
For years, medical researchers have attempted to utilize laser technology for the safe, effective and enduring removal of unwanted hair. Such a technology is now available. The laser employed by The New England Vein & Laser Center is one of the first lasers ever developed shown to be effective in removing unwanted hair safely and effectively. In fact, clinical studies in both the United States and Canada have demonstrated that this laser treatment has achieved outstanding success in removing unwanted hair.
The Technique
The laser used to remove unwanted hair emits an intense beam of light that is absorbed selectively by the root of the hair shaft. The laser beam heats the adjacent hair follicles, destroying them while leaving the other tissues unharmed. Apart from the excellent clinical results achieved by this advanced laser, the technique requires no preparation, such as the need to grow hair prior to the treatment, and usually takes just 10 to 60 minutes, depending on the extent and areas of unwanted hair. Following laser treatment, the patient merely experiences a slight redness in the affected area that disappears after several hours. The average patient requires only 5 treatments over the course of a few months to achieve optimum results. |
