Vein stripping was for many decades and even currently a standard practice for dealing with large, bulging, tortuous varicose veins. Vascular surgeons use this outdated mode that requires general or spinal anesthesia in a hospital setting. Large, multiple incisions leaving unsightly scars can be expected. Post operative recovery is usually painful and recuperation includes prolonged bed rest and time out of work.
Dr. Margolis has extensive vein surgery experience and is an expert in removing the largest of varicose veins by using a technique called Ambulatory Phlebectomy. Developed in Europe, this procedure allows treatment in the surgeon's office, using local Novocain-type medicine in place of general anesthesia. Tiny 2-3 mm punctures are then painlessly made and the vein is removed in small segments. This is done with no stitches and scant puncture marks. You'll be back to routine activity the next day in most cases, except you will be prohibited from impact exercise (jogging, aerobics, tennis, etc.) for 2 weeks.
This is truly a revolutionary method of treatment. Currently, Dr. Margolis is applying for a patent on an instrument that should advance the technique further.
